Never Underestimate the Shortstop

The shortstop may be required to do any number of important plays as they protect third base and keep runners from making it home. They must be ready to nail a runner who is trying to steal third, for example, and they must be prepared to be the relay man when a ball has been thrown out past the center fielders or left fielders. Shortstops like college athlete Aaron Breslow must have a quick reaction time, an ability to make split second decisions, sound judgment of the strength of their fellow players, and an accurate throwing arm.

In the case of a relay throw when the ball has gone into the outfield, the shortstop must be ready to receive the ball with their glove shoulder pointing toward the infield or the base that they are throwing to. Aaron Breslow or any other professional, collegiate, semi-pro or amateur shortstop must be able to catch the baseball, transfer it, and throw all it – all in one smooth motion. When they are able to make this quick and smooth transfer in a relay throw, they save time that may enable the team to get the base runner out, which is important during particularly during a close play when every second counts. And if they have really strong relay skills that the other team picks up on, the opposing players won’t be so quick to make aggressive plays for the bases.

New Years Baseball Style

ESPN has a great article of the usual New Year’s Resolutions but added a baseball twist to it. One of my, Aaron Matthew Breslow’s, favorite resolution is, help the unfortunate, go to a Royals game. They list many other funny resolutions with puns to baseball fans like me. You should read the whole thing at http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/091230&sportCat=mlb. There’s a cool animated picture to go a long with the article too. I hope everyone has a great and Happy New Year.

Aaron Breslow on Adam Everett

Detroit will be seeing shortstop Adam Everett again in the coming season. The Tigers re-signed the free agent for a one-year deal. Everett could get more starts at shortstop than this years 107.  Adam Everett, 32, was drafted in the first round of the 1998 Major League Baseball Draft and established himself for his defensive prowess as the starting shortstop for the Houston Astros in 2003. That same year in August, he hit the first ever inside-the-park home run at Minute Maid Park against the New York Mets. In 2007, he became the all-time shortstop home run leader for the Houston Astros with 34. I, Aaron Breslow, look forward to watching more of Adam’s career as a shortstop.

Shortstop a Hard Position to Fill

Aaron Breslow tries to keep up on baseball news, even in the off season. I was reading today that the Red Sox shortstop, Alex Gonzalez decided to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, leaving the Red Sox shortstop less. I agree that shortstop is one of the hardest positions play in baseball and an even harder position to fill on a team. Too read the full article on the Red Sox shortstop dilemma go to http://www.nesn.com/2009/11/red-sox-shortstop-carousel-continues-to-turn-with-alex-gonzalezs-departure.html.

J.J. Hardy Gets A Fresh Start

I, Aaron Breslow, was just reading how the Brewers traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for outfielder Carlos Gomez. Hardy was one of the leagues most promising shortstops and was the 2007 All-Star, but this last year did not go in Hardy’s favor. Hopefully being traded to the Twins with former team mate Joe Mauer, will lift his spirits and give Hardy the fresh start to get back on an All-Star track. #2 Overall short stop- Jose Reyes, New York Mets

#3 Overall short stop- Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies

#4 Overall short stop- Stephen Drew, Arizona Diamondbacks

Hanley Ramierz is obviously the  first player I, Aaron Breslow, would choose for my fantasy team.

Aaron Breslow Talks Shortstop

Another important trait of the shortstop is a loud voice, because they have to be very vocal during short hops or fly balls into the outfield.
Aaron Breslow experienced this first hand. If they know they can catch the ball they must be able to vocalize this to the outfielders so they don’t make a play for the ball at the same time. And they may also have a better chance of catching a fly ball that has been in the air for a while, in which case they must also ward off the outfielders. But if they hear the outfielder call for the ball after a long run in they must be ready to think fast and clear out to avoid a collision.

It takes a special kind of athlete to play shortstop, and coaches must understand the importance of this position in order to utilize the player to their full potential. The whole team can benefit when they have a good shortstop doing their best.
